BERLIN From October 2017 I’ll be living in Berlin. Initially it will be for a short period, just a semester, then we’ll see how things develop. Berlin is a special city that I’ve come to know over the past year, and I must say that it has always made a good impression (so far!). It’s a city brimming with history, events, political and cultural upheavals and all this can be felt on its streets. Of course, I know people who think it is too "weighty" - every wall has too many stories to tell. For my part, I really like the sensation of walking through streets and gardens where important chapters of today's history are still being written. Moreover, like Kennedy, who uttered the famous phrase "Ich bin ein Berliner", I hope soon to be able to feel a certain affinity with those words - though for very different reasons of course. Berlin is a rich, very diverse city, where there’s literally space for everything and everyone. Underground culture thrives, Berlin is the cradle of electronic music and a variety of youth movements. The cult of tradition and classical culture goes hand in hand with this, so much so indeed that the famous Altar of Pergamum, one of the masterpieces of Hellenistic art, is housed at Berlin's Pergamon Museum. That museum is located on the beautiful Museum Insel (museum island): a small island in the Spree river, home to the city's most important museums. And besides, there’s also my future University, the "Hanns Eisler" Hochschule, where I’ll continue my studies and cultivate my various interests.
Of course, most important of all, Berlin is a very rich city from a musical point of view, it hosts some of the world’s best orchestras and is home to wonderful concert halls, with extraordinary acoustics. I’ll certainly be at the Berliner Philharmonie very often for symphony concerts, but my main objective is to see as many performances as I can at the Deutsche Oper and the Staatsoper Berlin, the German language repertoire in particular will certainly be an unforgettable experience. I cannot wait to buy my first tickets!
